Diderot was a master categorizer – likely the best of all categorizers who have thus far seen days. Diderot had a hierarchy of categorization that only he was truly able to understand. I cannot, of course, begin to explain even the little that I know of his system but to tell you this: the grandest category which sat atop the very pinnacle of his pyramid of categories was a grouping he called “Pleiades.” All things were categorized in Diderot’s archive but only the loftiest held this designation. These were the things, the ideas, the Forms which could only be seen or experienced in one’s periphery. They hold the highest value. Until Diderot (and since Diderot,) the substance of the category Pleiades had refused categorization. And if you asked the Pleiades (if you could ask the Pleiades) they would tell you that not even Diderot has yet been able to categorize them. This is where Diderot and the Pleiades differ.
