Lucretius took the old book off of the shelf and felt the cover. It caught his eye for the first time as being an object. He couldn’t begin to guess how many times he had pulled the book out of its familiar slot on the shelf in order to reference one passage or another. He wondered why it wasn’t until just now that he saw the physical aesthetic of this particular book. It was ugly. Either nobody put any care into its design, or else the designer was just plain bad at designing books. “You know,” he thought, “it is easy to always spot the spine text though”. “Whenever I want it, the spine announces its presence boldly.” Lucretius wondered if John L. Stephens had any say in it’s design. “He probably couldn’t have cared less…”
